Man, remember when this place was cool?

I know you’ve been dying to check out the new Viracocha space. Well here’s your chance: Megan Keely and her band are having a CD release show there this weekend, Saturday Oct 23.
Every time I hear Megan Keely, I remember that she has one of the most beautiful folk songwriter voices in San Francisco. She also plays a mean ukulele and kazoo. I first saw her at an Amnesia open mic and quickly saw that she totally out-classed the other performers. Of course, the other “performers” were weird spoken word artists, guys who just figured out how to play “Under the Bridge” on guitar, and shockingly bad insult comics. But still.
Meg got her start at the ever-popular open mic at Hotel Utah. She quickly caught a lot of folks attention and starting doing her own regular gig at Amnesia. Her delightful dad and bro are also in her band. I have no idea how they make that work. I couldn’t even play Legos with my brother for 20 minutes without kicking him in the nose.
Here’s the latest from her record, a tune called “Anymore”:
The album is called “Acorn Collection” and Megan made acorn necklaces for the first 60 lucky buyers. I guarantee it’s the best acorn related purchase you’ll make this year.
The show is at Viracocha on Valencia and 21st. It starts at 8pm and there’s a $10 suggested donation. Mission Mission favorites, and also recent CD releasers, Gaucho will also be playing!
If you miss the show, you can also grab it in CD or digital at her bandcamp page.
Mission Loc@l posted profiles of the Mission High Football team members sharing their favorite things about playing the game. Shocker: a bunch of them like hitting folks without getting in trouble. Crazy world! That’s almost as wild as bicyclists who use their bikes for transportation.
Woah, I just realized that the most comprehensive definition of hipsters was achieved in this past week. First, Ben at Mission Loc@l:
Ben, I think you’re close. However, I think you’re leaving out some minority groups. Maybe add Asian folks who don’t wear Cal sweatshirts and we’re getting warmer.
Then this from MM reader Rod:
Bingo! Next, please.
Here’s a good one, what’s a “bro”? Lately, I’ve seen dudes who are clearly hippies being called “bros”. Are hippies also bros? I guess hippies might say the word “bro” on occasion. But I guess I do that too. Wait, am I a bro? I also can’t name a member of the Giants baseball team.
You’ve probably noticed the strange words “Another Monkey” pop up on the ex-Conduit restaurant space on Valencia and 14th. No, it’s not a pet store for repeat primate buyers, it’s a Thai restaurant. The owner has another Monkey-related restaurant in San Francisco, so you can think of this spot as it’s sequel. The “Blade II” to it’s “Blade”, if you will.
Another Monkey’s events manager Miranda was kind enough to invite us down with an enticing $50 gift certificate. Turns out all of us could make it, so how could we refuse? It sounded nice to do a team dinner that didn’t include tater tots for a change.
Read on for the full scoop on this spot!
Mission Loc@l reminds us not to miss “Los Monólogos de la Vagina” on Nov. 20 at Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts.
Remember, it’s pronounced: “Va-HEE-na”.
Ariel and I spotted a series of these on Saturday covering a wall on between 18th and 19th on Valencia, all with different messages. I don’t know where this guy got the visionary idea of making something as banal as a soup can into “art”, but I like it! It’s so… so… “popular”. Or, “pop” if you will.
I’ve also never seen a formal apology on a wheatpaste piece before. Do you forgive them?
The latest on EDW Lynch’s latest romantic status was revealed at a press conference last week at Amnesia:
So glad to see the return of BBC reporter Darvid Tokishi. Anyway, they are accepting dating applications for all you interested parties, ladies or men. Legally, they can’t require you to specify.
The EDW Lynch corporate manglomerate is delighted to announce we are now accepting applications for our Fall romantic evaluation meeting (dating) season.
The manglomerate has been inundated by romantic inquiries ever since EDW Lynch announced our triumphant return to the San Francisco romantic market last week. Our easy to use dating application form will streamline the process of selecting qualified applicants for romantic evaluation meetings during Fall 2010.
Apply Now! EDW Lynch Application for Romantic Evaluation Meeting
As you can see, there are some very important questions in the evaluation:
I’ll have to run these documents by legal and touch base with the VP of Romantic Affairs. In the meantime, you can review the documentation at EDW Lynch.

Traditional jazz outfit Gaucho has been holding down the Wednesday 8-10pm slot at Amnesia for over 7 years. That has got to be one of the longest-running gigs in the Mission, right? Their new album “Pearl” was released today by the Mission’s own Porto Franco Records.
The record was recorded in Amnesia early this year while the bar was closed during the day. I was fortunate enough to sit in on those sessions while munching on my first ever Rhea’s sandwiches and it was a real treat. “Pearl” is almost entirely original compositions by guitarist and band leader Dave Ricketts that feel right at home with classic trad jazz standards.
A few songs feature vocalist Tamar Korn who they met last year on tour in NYC. Her amazing falsetto voice makes me feel like I’ve travelled back to a time where “dudes” where “fellas” and “fixies” were “penny-farthings“. Here she is singing a song about Dave’s cat:
You buy the record (CD or download) and check out some free tracks at Gaucho’s web site.
