Dolores Park Movie Night Returns

It’s that time of the year again when the masses of SF guerrilla cinema seekers pile on the layers and huddle around their thermos of Blue Bottle and Jameson, jockeying for the best blanket spot from which to watch free classic flicks.

Hoping to capture the magic of last year’s (or was it two years ago?) season opener featuring classic underdog Daniel Larusso overcoming the meanness of those bad boys from Cobra Kai, Dolores Park Movie Night is starting off the season with another timeless 80′s hit about a kid you want to root for.  I’ll give you a hint:

It’s only natural that we witness Marty McFly showing both Biff and the Space Time Continuum who’s boss. Throw in a healthy dose of “Great Scott!” and you’ve got yourself a fantastic plan for a cheap date.

Also, these nights are put on DIY style by people who care about good movies.  Be a dear and kick them down a few bucks so they can keep this awesome tradition alive.  So far, we’ve seen Annie Hall, Pretty in Pink, and the Breakfast Club, all of which were excellent.  Any hope for a Repo Man screening this year?

UPDATE!!! Commenter MrEricSir clued us in to the fact that Film Night in the Park (pictured above) is a corporately sponsored event while DOLORES PARK MOVIE NIGHT is the DIY fest I meant to refer to.  Wow, I’m all mixed up now!

Big Wheel Race Proceeds Despite Rain; San Francisco Again Proves Adults Can Look Ridiculous

Even if the peak of an Easter storm successfully forced the Hunky Jesus extravaganza indoors and away from Dolores Park, it wasn’t able to deter a different legion of fanatics from competing in their own brand of Big Wheel craziness.

The fervent downpour made for hazardous conditions and the wind was turning umbrellas inside out, but that just helped keep things interesting on one of the steepest blocks in the City at 2oth and Vermont in Potrero.  Hundreds of adults threw caution and common sense to the wind as they barreled down the windy street in their plastic jalopies, and the results weren’t always pretty.  But I think that was the point.

Also, the guy riding the recycling bin definitely has the right idea.

You Just Don't Get It, Man

Gonzalo Bergara Quartet Tonight @ Bluesix

Hey guys, I know your bummed about the weather, but these guys play some killer gypsy jazz that should warm you right up. Gonzalo Bergara Quartet are from LA and they absolutely killed at Revolution Cafe last night. They play a mix of Django Reinhardt tunes and original compositions. They SHRED. I doubt you’ll be seeing virtuosic guitar or clarinet playing like this for a while. See the video for proof:

Also, Gonzalo hella looks like Jesus. I don’t know if  he’ll be among the other Jesii today at the competition, but I think he would definitely have a shot at taking the crown (of thorns).

Hunky Jesus Competition Moved Indoors

Bummer dudes, the annual Easter Sunday Dolores Park Hunky Jesus Competition has moved to the Eureka Valley Recreation Center at 100 Collingwood, between 18th and 19th St.

No word on whether or not you can put down a blanket, bring your dog, and sip a tall boy of Tecate out of a paper bag there, but don’t count on it.

(Thanks Laurie)

The SF Mixtape Society is hosting their second event at the Makeout Room this Sunday, April 4th. The theme is “Fools Rush In”. No mixtape required to attend, but if you want to leave with one you gotta bring one. There will be prizes for the best track listing and artwork.

Get to work! You only have four days to comb through Thrift Town for a casette recorder and figure out how to cleverly work in Da Brat’s Funkafied into the mix.

DANCE PARTY Pirate Cat Radio Benefit at Blue Macaw TONIGHT!!!

We’re always happy to report something positive at the Blue Macaw, that oft-embattled new venue at the old 12 Galaxies place, so I’m sure you can imagine me sitting here pooping more rainbows than SF’s schizophrenic “now it’s raining/now it’s not” weather has over the last few days.  Couple that with a benefit for our favorite under-siege radio station (RIP Energy 92.3–although MOVEiN 99.7 has picked up the slack quite diligently) and you’ve got something to do on a Wednesday night!

This one should be rather fun, too, since it’s a 50′s and 60′s OLDIES and SOUL NIGHT DANCE PARTY hosted by Pirate Cat DJs PsychoKat, Voodoo Idol, and Starbuck!  And don’t worry if you suck at dancing, because Brian Gardner of the Mission’s own Swing Goth will be on the scene with his innovative fun not frustration teaching technique.

The fun starts at 7pm tonight, with dance lessons starting at 7:30 at the Blue Macaw on Mission and 21st.  Admission will be on a $5-20 sliding scale, depending on your generosity.  Keeping in proper sock-hop theme, alcoholic Root Beer Floats will be served as well!  Nobody tell the chaperons!!!

What’s Up With the New 12 Galaxies?

Three Great Shows Tonight

Quinn DeVeaux and the Bluebeat Revue bring you back to the time when no one would take your seriously unless you had three hot chicks with long gloves singing backup and pantomiming lyrics. Singer Viola Viola, in particular, has a serious case of high-on-life. You’ll know exactly who I’m talking about when you see her. Revolution Cafe, 22nd and Bartlett. 9pm, no cover, tip lots.

The Nice Guy Trio will be playing their own arrangements of tunes by local composers and songwriters of all genres, including Marcus ShelbyMeklit Hadero, Aaron Novik, Dina Maccabee, and Dave Ricketts. The Red Poppy Art House on 23rd and Folsom. 8pm, $10-15 cover.

Everyone’s favorite yodelin’ Japanese-immigrant cowboy Toshio Hirano will be performing his monthly gig at the Rite Spot Cafe on 17th and Folsom. Ask him about how much he loves Jimmie Rodgers, and be prepared to have your ass charmed off. 9-12am, no cover, tip the man.

Aw hell, why am I even bothering to post today? You are all probably on your way to the park with a Rhea’s sandwich and a six pack of blue-ribbon-winning beer.

'Beeeeer–I mean, Braaaaaiins!'

Fair warning: you might have to deal with drunk zombies tonight. Zombie Steve F. sends us word of a last-minute Zombie Bar Crawl. They are meeting at Dirty Thieves at 24th & Treat and will supply the blood.

If you’re into totally trolling the unsuspecting public, then Zombie Bar Crawls (Limps?) are probably as good as it gets. I’m personally no so into this stuff since I find it offensive towards zombies. Haven’t they been through enough?

When Chocolate Cookies Do Battle, Everyone Wins

quite the tasting plate!

Once again, the creme of the San Francisco foodie fanatic crop showed up in droves this past Sunday for the latest SF Food Wars event, this time with chocolate cookies on their minds.  200 tickets had sold out in just about 3 minutes, and I was determined to see just what all the fuss was about.  Hosted this time at Mighty in the burgeoning  SOMISSPO  neighborhood (where SOMA, Mission, and Potrero meet–take that NOPA!), the event drew the City’s most creative cookie chefs (yeah, I just did that).

Chocolate espresso shortbread? Yes please.
