We Built This City, for the second time this week, delivers a picture of some food that looks so good I want to jump through my computer screen and devour. This time it’s the soba salad at Cha-Ya.

Mission Burritos for Rhodes Scholars

As the legend of the Mission Burrito is retold around the world, it stands to reason that crafty international entrepeneurs will begin recognize its potential as an All-World meal talent fit for any palate.  Such is the case in Oxford, UK, where ravenous chaps can now satisfy their hunger at THE MISSION Mexican Grill

Checking their website, it appears that they’ve got the right idea with offerings of carnitas, adobo asada, and a grilled veggie burrito that sounds suspiciously Papalotian.  Nonetheless, I’m not sure if you can ever really trust the British when it comes to food, especially if their idea of a cheesesteak is any indication.

Of course, you can’t question their enthusiasm, as evidenced by the crazed expression on their chief taco chef’s face in addition to some choice quotes from their website:

Our expert burrito makers will entertain while they serve – it’s quite an art, so our staff are trained to be the best of the best.

Try our extra hot salsa, if you dare!   Made with Dorset Naga’s, the world’s hottest chillies – our chef has to wear a mask when making it!

As for price, it seems as though all the burritos are in the 5-pound range (woah, that just gave me a crazy idea–stay tuned!), which comes out to around $8 US–sure, pricier than El Farolito and Cancun, but less expensive than Papalote.  Not so bad for a land where a sandwich can easily set you back fifteen bucks!

Mission Community Market, Now Every Thursday

Civic Center has one.  Embarcadero too.  Hell, even the Castro and Noe Valley have their own!  Fortunately, the arbitrary injustice that prevented the Mission from holding its own farmer’s market ends this Thursday.  Formerly available only to those unafraid of braving the underground and its ridiculously long line, the Mission Community Market makes its long-awaited debut this Thursday from 4-8pm at Bartlett Street between 21st and 22nd. 

And it promises to be more than just a mere famer’s market, offering live music, mural painting, craft vendors, and even Capoeira!  Think of it as an organic, edible indie mart with a taste of traditional Mission culture thrown in, along with food carts from the La Cocina stable (and plenty of snarky Mission bloggers).  While some have pondered whether we really even need another farmer’s market in SF, allow me to be frank in my reply:  As if!  Let’s hope this ambitious weekly event becomes another fine Mission institution!

'Off The Grid' Street Food Meetups Coming To Mission Playground

For the past three Fridays from 5-9pm, Matt Cohen (SF Cart Project) has been organizing “Off The Grid” meetups in Fort Mason where all your favorite independent food trucks gather and vie for your attention with their adorable, pun-filled, flavor-enhancing names. The event also features an alcohol tent and local live music. In fact, tonight the Ferocious Few will be playing at the event, if you’re not up to anything.

Last Friday, I hopped on the 49 and checked it out. Vendor favorites like El Haurache Loco, Soul Cocina, Chairman Bao, and Kung Fu Tacos were all in attendance. It was fun, although I must say I was a bit overwhelmed with the selection. I wasn’t exactly hungry or wealthy enough to spend $7 at three different trucks to try stuff out. Still, it was nice to know that there was one place I could count on all these guys to be once a week as opposed to following 50 twitter feeds.

Matt has been pushing to hold similar events in the Haight, Civic Center, and the Mission. After last night’s Parks and Rec meeting, he got his approval. The Mission location will be Mission Playground.

No word on when the permitting process will wrap up, but after chatting with him a bit last week, Matt seems like a pretty motivated dude and I’m sure he’ll get the ball rolling right away.
