Now let’s rock out:
(The Sonics are playing their first Bay Area shows ever as part of the Total Trash Halloween Bash in a couple weeks btw. The Sonics. The Sonics.)
Mission Local reports:
Watch out for cameras in Dolores Park over the next couple of days. The new HBO series, “Looking” will be shooting a birthday scene in the park Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you happen to mosey on by during those times, you just may catch a glimpse of yourself when the show airs.

Look at these great photos our photographer Jess Kelso took at the Iggy and the Stooges show at C2SV in San Jose last week!
I guess people weren’t into going because A.) it was in San Jose (fair, but to be fair there’s a great Hawaiian food place there called Grub Shack) and B.) it was “a tech conference” (fair, but to be fair it was also a music festival in which IGGY AND THE STOOGES played on a tiny little stage in a tiny little park on a beautiful late-summer night).
Anyway, those of us who made it had an incredible time. Here’s the scene, during height of the Stooges set:
Iggy Pop himself did poke fun at the tech element of the event a couple times. “This has a syncopated rhythm… but here in San Jose you could call it… an algorithm,” he says, “Here’s an algorithm up your ASSHOLE!” (And then they launch into “Funhouse.”)
And then during “Search and Destroy,” as he sings the “I’m using technology” line, he grins and points at bandmate James Williamson, who had been an electronics engineer and executive at Sony and gave one of the event’s keynote speeches.
Also notable: there were two Dammits onstage that night, current Stooges drummer Toby Dammit (whose “percussatory chops” were on display in the Mission about five years ago) and current Oh Sees bassist Petey Dammit (whose chops will be on display in the Mission later this week), who, along with his band, warmed up the crowd before the Stooges went on:
I don’t think the two Dammits are related.
I don’t write about books very often, mainly because I don’t read very many books, but I’m halfway through Fondly and it is a fucking trip. After reading it for a while, I’d be going about my day and suddenly have a thought like, “Trains probably don’t really exist,” and actually think this thought for like 10 seconds before realizing my error. This is a good book.
Here’s the deal on the party, which starts at 7:30pm on Tuesday:
I’m throwing this sweet book launch at The Booksmith (1644 Haight) for my new book, Fondly. Andi’s going to read a “book report,” Alice Kim is going to read some new fiction, there’ll be other readers, some weird music, free beers, and snacks, and everything you could hope for.
Sounds pretty good! Hopefully it’ll be as good as Colin’s reading of a mysterious note we found on a burnt-out dock near Port Costa:
You know him, you love him. And in case you don’t, Mission local Meesha explains:
I really like this guy. Rolls by on his Segway daily blasting some of the best low rider oldie jams on the daily. Today was particularly special, as he had a poodle tucked under his arm whilst sucking on a lollipop! What a legend.
