The Bold Italic asked them why:
We were so sad to hear you’re closing up shop. Why is The Curiosity Shoppe closing?
Don’t be sad! The simple answer is that it’s time. We’ve had an amazing run and met so many unbelievably creative and talented people through the Shoppe, we just feel that now is the right time to open up some space in our lives for other creative opportunities.
We keep hearing about the rising rents on Valencia St. You guys have been there for years – were rent prices factors in your decision at all?
No. This wasn’t a financial decision, it was a creative one. That being said, of course the neighborhood is changing, and it is a lot of work to run a business in the Mission. But we never wanted to be anywhere else, and in the time since we opened we’ve seen Valencia go from a local destination to a national (and even international) one as well. We’re extremely proud of all of the other small businesses in the neighborhood that continue to make it such a unique and inspiring place.

Oh and note that the online shop is closing too, so get it while the getting’s good.
Jay left our delightful neighborhood for LA a few years ago to pursue his artistic passion by creating one of my favorite TV shows ever, the hilarious Bob’s Burgers. Now he’s back for the weekend to show off some of the other rad stuff that been oozing from his imagination, and you can see it all for yourself tonight over at Fecal Face Gallery here in the Mission!
Not content to merely infiltrate your eyeballs, he’ll also be invading your auditory cortex the very next night along with his former partner-in-crime Josh Yule at the night they both started way back before he left: Smithsfits at the Knockout! And check it out, they’re giving away Smithsfits pins to the first 50 people who show up!
See you there!
So Saturday was Australia day – did you miss it? Well thanks to our Australian friend Jess, we definitely did not. Unlike America, the British basically just gave Australia its independence, but that didn’t stop the Australians from coming up with important Australia day traditions like making weird cakes and stringing up bags of Franzia. Wikipedia explains the latter, in a particularly head-scratching entry:
Goon of Fortune is an Australian drinking game between any number of individual people. The name of the game is a spoof on the TV show Wheel of Fortune.
“This game is based on popular game show wheel of fortune. 1 or more (depending on number of participants) goonsacks are pegged to a Hills Hoist and players sit under the perimeter of the clothes line. A mixture of red and white wines can be used if players are of expert level however only 1 variety is recommended for amateurs. A player spins the hills hoist to start the game and when the clothesline comes to rest the player/s under where the goonbag stopped must drink an amount of goon agreed upon before the commencement of the spin. Players are prohibited to impede the natural spin of the clothesline in any way [sic]. Penalties vary on surroundings.”
The quote is from a defunct website. You’re welcome.

Tom Madonna from Shotwell’s tweets about it, and then the whole incident turns up as an essay in The Atlantic:
I called up Madonna to get a little more information about what happened when the Glasses couple walked into Shotwell’s.
“When you buy a new phone, it’s in your pocket, but this, you’re wearing something on your face. Anyone that cares what they look like is not gonna wear Google glasses. That’s my opinion,” Madonna said. “If you are super nerdy and you like to show off that you’re in tech and smart and all those things, I can see you probably wearing Google Glasses, but you are probably in a bubble or … new. We’ve all heard all this stuff. Like, this guy moved to SF and he comes to the bar. He’s from Scottsdale and he’s using all these [tech] words. I had to stop him. I said, ‘You sound interesting and different in Phoenix, but you sound boring here. You are cliche.’”
Read on for talk of SF vs. Brooklyn, more interaction with the couple with the glasses, and lots more sass from Tom.

We are testing online ordering tonight at MCF San Francisco. Give it a try if you were thinking about ordering. missionchinesefood.com/sf

My pro tip with Mission Chinese has always been to go for lunch or order takeout to avoid that 2-hour horribly disorganized wait-list BS. Well starting tonight you’ll be able to place your order online here. Hell, they will even deliver orders over $20.
Go ahead, slam them with more traffic and convince them it was a bad idea.
Update: I think they meant Thursday night. Mission Chinese is closed Wednesdays, as several commenters pointed out.
