Drink of the Week: Mezcal old fashioned at Virgil’s

My pal Paul Suway was raving about it all night last night, so I finally caught up with him and tried it and boy was he right. Bartender Tom T. mixes ‘em up just right, and they’re smoky and mellow and damn.

And here’s the thing: because of the nature of the Virgil’s Sea Room drink menu, they’ve gotta name this drink after a notable San Franciscan. Any ideas?

Ty Segall’s favorite taco, and why tacos are better than burritos

The A.V. Club today devotes a LOT of words to formerly local hero Ty Segall’s love of tacos:

The A.V. Club: Why do you love tacos?

Ty Segall: Growing up in Southern California and moving to Northern California, tacos are a part of the culture. Also, I don’t know why, but it’s always been more of an excuse for me to spend time with people eating a taco, especially in San Francisco. There was this one place, El Castillito, that we’d always go, and me and my buddy John [Dwyer] from Thee Oh Sees would always meet there twice a week and get a taco. It’s a pretty rad excuse to just sit and eat and talk. I don’t really have any other foods or places in my life that are excuses to hang out with people.

Read on to hear Ty name his favorite taqueria in all the land (which is in SF) and to hear why tacos are better than burritos (something about warmth and love).

(Thanks, Linds!)

Five years of Four Barrel means free coffee all day today!

Has it really been that long already?  Besides the free coffee, they’ve also enlisted the help of some  friends from last year:

  • Glass Coat Photo Booth will be setting up one of their beautiful, free photo booths from 12pm-4pm.
  • Also, there will be two Skee Ball units in the back for people to square off against one another, courtesy of local Skee Ball champ, Joey the Cat.
  • At noon, we will be serving free slices of delicious Tartine cake, while the three cakes last of course, which is usually, like, five minutes.
  • For the kids, we’ll have a small petting zoo set up from noon to 3pm in one of our parklet corrals, courtesy of Little Explorers Mobile Petting Zoo.
  • For the lunchtime crowd, Los Compadres, a delicious taco truck, will be posted up outside if people want some food to go along with their lattes.  It’ll be a hoot.

If anyone can beat my score of 450 in Skee Ball, I’ll buy you a puppy.

Night Market kicks off SF Street Food Festival festivities this Friday night!

The SF Street Food Festival takes place Saturday in the Mission, but the party really starts the night before. Here’s what’s up:

The 2nd Annual San Francisco Night Market will be the kick-off for the festivities of the 5th Annual San Francisco Street Food Festival. This event will partner well-known chefs from across the country with La Cocina program participants to create one-of-a-kind dishes in an environment reminiscent of the nighttime markets in Bangkok, Mexico City, and other vibrant cities of the world.

There will be music, dancing, drinks, twinkling lights, and the enjoyment of exciting and varied flavors.

In addition to food, music, and drinks, this year La Cocina is thrilled to welcome cultural games and activities to the Night Market.  The games include familiar childhood favorites to  more adventurous activities – from cornhole and skee ball in the North American station, Berlin-style ping pong in the Eastern European station, backgammon and a hookah lounge in the Middle Eastern station, and so much more.

And check it out, a discount code for Mission Mission readers: “SFSFFinMission.” Get tickets here! (Note that the VIP ticket includes open bar.)

Drink of the Week: Any drink with a perfectly California-shaped hunk of orange peel in it

The problem with pubs, according to George Orwell

Seriously, ladies, it’s me and like eight dudes at this bar right now; please join us. (But for goodness’ sake leave the kids at home — I don’t care what Orwell says.) (Crispin is a hard cider btw; girls like cider, right?) (Jkjkjk!)

Crème baby bootie brûlée

Probably the best part about having an actual brick & mortar shop instead of a mere food cart is the ability to finally have an on-site diaper-changing station.  In case you were wondering where the caramel comes from…

Second Salumeria location coming soon to a few blocks away from the original

The New 20th Street Corridor is still just getting going, and already one of its anchors is setting its sights on another corner of the neighborhood, Bryant near 15th. Eater SF reports:

Salumeria, the deli from the Central Kitchen and Flour + Water team, has signed a deal to open their second location there, in the lobby of the former Hamm’s brewery building. It’s a recently renovated mixed-use space that accommodates a number of offices, includingRdio and Asana, and will presumably provide a local lunch option for said offices in the otherwise industry- and chain-heavy corridor near the Potrero Center. [link]

It opens in September, and they’re gonna serve Hamm’s :)
