Pierogi restaurant coming soon to Mission Street

For years, we’ve been wondering when you might be able to get a decent pierogi in the Mission. (Old World does a good job, but they’re a truck/pop-up, so you can’t always get it when you want it. They have a couple of Hanukkah dinners coming up btw.)

Now, perhaps the time has come. Grub Street last week broke the news:

A new pierogi restaurant called Stuffed is making its way to the small shop space that currently houses Mission Sub (2788 Mission between 23rd and 24th). Grub Street catches the news this a.m. and some further digging reveals that owners Dana Sacco and Andy Schoengrund have been developing their pierogi bar concept for a number of months now. We’ve reached out for some further details and an opening timeframe (it will obviously be 2013) and will let you know as soon as we know more.

And today they published a first look at the menu:

Traditional Pierogi
Potato, farmer’s cheese, cheddar cheese. Served with onions and sour cream. Bacon-wrapped option.

Veggie Pierogi
Potato, portabella mushroom, spinach, goat cheese. Served with parmesan cheese sauce or pesto sauce.

Pulled Pork Pierogi
Seasoned slow cooked pork with walnut butter sauce and fontina cheese.

Salmon Pierogi
Potato with cream cheese, smoked salmon. Served with butter and lemon juice sauce and dill.

Lamb Pierogi
Ground lamb with Mediterranean spices with a goat cheese center. Spinach dough, and served with hummus sauce.

Spicy Buffalo Pierogi
Potato with blue cheese, pan-fried in spicy Buffalo wing sauce.

Breakfast
Pierogi topped with eggs Benedict with plain potato or chorizo potato fillings.
Bacon-wrapped option

Daaaamn.

Note: the above pic is a pic of an average, mellow brunch at Dear Mom. Expect much more of a shitshow on Sunday.

Drink of the Week: the Bottom of the Bay

Well, this had to happen sometime. If San Francisco’s going to have its own substitute for Jager, it’s only fair that we have our own kind of jagerbombs. Local chill bar Evelyn Lee is filling this market gap with the appropriately named Bottom of the Bay. A healthy shot of Fernet is briefly suspended above partial pint of Drake’s Imperial Stout before being plunged into the depths of the creamy, sudsy brew. The result is somewhere between amazing and not-half-bad, with the wintery spices in the Fernet mixing nicely with the chocolate in the beer. I don’t think I’ve ever had a jagerbomb, so I can’t make a direct comparison, but this definitely tastes several times better than the Irish Car variety. Plus it doesn’t curdle so no chugging is required.

Perfect for a rainy night this holiday season when everyone else has gone out of town, and you’re getting shitfaced by yourself because you’re an adult and you can do what you want.

Read on for the startling conclusion.

Urban Taco Fabricator

You can complain about how Tacolicious on Valencia Street is ruining the flavor of the hood and gentrifying the fuck out of the place all you want, but just be grateful that we don’t have an Urban Taco Fabricator like they do in LA.

Yet.

Two local beers that taste like popular desserts

They’re both seasonal specialties from Cervecería de MateVeza. Brewer Jim says they usually don’t name a beer until after it’s done, which may account for the accuracy of the names — the names are very accurate. So if you like dulce de leche or Tootsie Rolls, go try these beers.

Here’s one now:

Oooh I wonder if these will be on hand at this weekend’s rock ‘n’ beer festival.

The Bay Brewed Rock and Roll Beer Festival features Bear in Heaven, Sonny and the Sunsets and UNLIMITED local beer tasting

The Bay Brewed returns to the Mission this Saturday afternoon! Bands in the middle, ping pong at the beginning and end, beer and eats the entire time:

RSVP and invite your friends! And get tickets here!

Attention vegetarians who are tired of portobello sandwiches

The portobello sandwich on Namu‘s lunch menu is totally legit. It will make you forget entirely all the times you were mad that a bland portobello sandwich was the only vegetarian option at whatever dumb restaurant you were at.

Omnivores, you will love it too.

P.S. Thinking of turning this blog into a blog exclusively devoted to how much I love everything about Namu. Y/N?

Drink of the week: growlers at Bi-Rite

Are you looking for the great taste of the Bay Area’s best beers bottled right at the source, but without the hassle of driving all over town to brewpubs and breweries? (Yes.) Well don’t fret, because Bi-Rite is stocking growlers from two of our favorite local brewers, Magnolia and Linden St.

For those who are wondering, a growler is basically a big bottle with a little stopper on top, so you can pour in beer from the tap and keep it fresh for a few days until you get around to drinking it. They’re really handy when you make it out to far-flung breweries in Northern California, especially when they’re serving beers on tap that aren’t available in bottles.

At Bi-Rite, they’ve got Magnolia’s signature Blue Bell Bitter, as well as the light but hearty Kalifornia Kolsch. I opted for the Linden St. Burning Oak Black Lager, which was warm and chocolatey without being heavy, like a slightly sweeter and richer Death & Taxes. There’s a nominal deposit of $1.50, recoverable when you return the bottle. I’m hoping they’ll just roll that over for my next purchase.
