Mission SRO Collaborative Community Event!

My buddy Josh from the Mission SRO collaborative alerted me to a community teach-in and press conference going down tomorrow at Dolores Street Community Services on Valencia between 20th and 21st.  Here’s the what:

San Francisco city officials and low income housing advocates will launch the newly expanded 311 that will benefit the more than 18,000 SRO residents throughout the city.  Formerly utilized mainly for outdoor issues (potholes, graffiti, parks, etc.), 311 has now been expanded to address building issues, such as pests, inadequate heat or water, blocked fire exits and more.  Advocates and city officials will be hitting the streets to get the word out and encourage residents to utilize the new service.

The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m.   District supervisors David Campos and David Chiu will be in attendance, among others.

The Mission SRO Collaborative program is an interesting one, and one whose efforts we’ve been happy to highlight in the past.  The non-profit provides outreach and education to residents of Single Room Occupancy (SRO, duh) hotels in the Mission, of which there are around 50, housing around 2,000 people.

It’s nice to hear there are organizations remedying all the shitty SF homelessness.  Me, I just work for the Internet.  The Internet doesn’t help anyone.

Check it out if at all interested.

Relieved Of Duty

Mission Police Station

I just hope this is able to reach you in time.

Last night I ran into a hot tip that originated at Sean from ARAWA, and I decided to follow up. The lead was good: The Mission Police Station has a public restroom that is available 24 hours a day.

That’s right. Now you don’t have to stand up against the side of a building and pretend you’re just a low-texter while trying not to splash on your shoes. At least not in the area around 17th and Valencia. You basically just straighten yourself up, waltz into the lobby, motion to one of the two bathrooms with a smile and a raise of the eyebrows and the cops behind the glass will buzz you right in. It’s as simple as that.

Paving the Way for the Korrito

You knew it was only a matter of time before all that KogiBBQ hype found its way to the Mission, and now you get to see what all the fuss is about (provided you haven’t tracked down SF’s own version somewhere in the FiDi, Kung Fu Tacos).

Already known as the closest competition of Pal’s Takeaway for “Best Sandwich bought from a liquor store,” Rhea’s Deli (19th and Valencia) has expanded their menu from the already delicious Katsu Pork and Korean Steak sandwiches to embrace the ongoing “Mexicanization” of Asian food.

The next logical step:  Korean Burritos anyone?

Spending an evening above 18th Street just, um, cueing up the tees, or hitting the ol’ little whiteys or whatever kind of slang is associated with golfing.

Potential New Park On 17th And Folsom

Mission Mission reader Todd gave us the heads up about an upcoming community meeting discussing a potential new park on 17th and Folsom:

We need your help to design a proposed new open space in the Northeast Mission! Help the City design this space and tell us what types of activities and programs are needed in the neighborhood.

The site is currently a parking lot on the corner of 17th and Folsom Streets. The City is working on acquiring this site and converting a portion of this space to a neighborhood park.

The following will be provided:

  • English to Spanish translation
  • Light refreshments
  • Childcare & youth friendly activities
  • Here’s the time and location:

Marshall Elementary School 1575 15th St. (at Capp)
    Saturday, January 23
    11:00 AM

I always thought this site across from the Rite Spot Cafe could use some beautifying. We all agree on parks right? I mean it’s not like this is a luxury condo, boutique store, or parking lot.

Well, I’m sure one of you will find a way to post a nasty comment about why parks are a bad idea. Such as how they have the tendency to attract those unsavory bike polo types. Go to it, readers!

    Pennies V. Fruit Flies

    Pennies V. Fruit Flies
Facing an invasion of fruit flies at The Secret Alley, Noel decides to employ a less-than-obvious method of getting rid of them: hanging a plastic bag with water and pennies in it over the counter. The idea being (I think) that the light reflecting out of the bag will confuse the little buggers, causing them to scatter.

Just in case this doesn’t happen to work, anyone have any other helpful ideas? The least obvious the better.

Anyone Ever Checked Out Dolores Park?

This photo made me salivate.  Short sleeves and skylines, swoon!  Love u, D. Park!

    Mission Playboy On the Prowl

This polo-clad Casanova has been scheming on anything with a low neckline and short neck in the Mission.  Watch out, ladies!  Most recently spotted between 23rd and 24th on Mission.

New Walgreens Reveals Future Color Scheme

Oh no. Oh no, no, no. You’re mucking this up terribly. Was that chilly white just a base coat? You were looking as beautiful as a Banana Republic. Must you really dress yourself as a Tex-Mex children’s hospital? Please reconsider.

From Sexpigeon, an update on the Walgreens-in-progress on Cesar Chavez/Mission.

I must say, I agree with the criticism so far.  However! I’m feeling positive toward 2k10 and all that it may bring.  Perhaps our new Walgreens will end up looking like a pimp pastel Mondrian?

    Fuck Off, Santa!

Lauren sent us this awesome shot of an Xmas tree on fire at Florida and 26th.

You know what this means: Guy Fawkes Day is a mere 10 months away!!!!  Get out ye groaty pudding and cabbage!
