SF Zine Fest 2013 is today and all weekend!

Can’t believe SF Zine Fest is here again already! Here’s the scoop:

The 12th annual San Francisco Zine Fest will be hosted at the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park (1199 9th Avenue + Lincoln Way) on August 31st and September 1st, 2013. As always, the SF Zine Fest is a FREE event to all public attendees.

We are proud to feature over 140 creators in two huge exhibition halls. Our hosted community of writers, artists, and zinesters will have an array of work on display, ranging from nationally recognized publishers in the DIY and small-press scenes, to local creators based throughout the Bay Area.

In addition to our exhibitors, SFZF will also host numerous events throughout the weekend, including spotlights on our special guests Justin Hall, Roman Muradov, & Sophia Foster-Dimino, as well as zinester workshops and discussions of all things DIY.

Small Crimes (aka Caryn Kesler) DJs American Tripps tonight

Beloved Mission partier Caryn Kesler has been real busy helping launch the new Mission-based radio station BFF.fm, but she’s taking time out of her schedule tonight, to perform before a real live audience at American Tripps:

It’s time once again for our reliable ol’ monthly party at DSF, right near the corner of Haight and Fillmore. Make a night of it with stops at any number of the Lower Haight’s fine watering holes and eateries, and then wash it all down with a night of BERLIN-STYLE PING PONG PARTY ACTION!

Making her American Tripps DJing debut this month is Small Crimes (of BFF.fm). Small Crimes says, via IM, “i’ve been deciding whether or not i want to play just electronica or like some electronic pop stuff too.” Sounds like a good dilemma to us!!!

RSVP and invite your friends!

Here’s the poster art:

NASTY fun at Thrift Town

Kseniya (not pictured) had a close encounter the other day:

Thrift Town employee unlocks a fitting room door for me. “Wait!” he says, and kicks at some sort of cloth bundle on the floor.

“Oh that’s NASTY.”

“Don’t go in there.” He closes the door and opens a different one, which is clear of nasty objects. “Someone made a poopie in there,” he says in a hushed voice, motioning to the other fitting room. “Nasty.”

Update: Mezcal old fashioned at Virgil’s is officially called the ‘Widow Norton’

Last week’s Drink of the Week
, which as of last week was still in need of a name (in light of the Virgil’s Sea Room tradition of naming signature cocktails after notable San Franciscans), has a name now! Wikipedia explains:

José Julio Sarria (December 12, 1922 or 1923 – August 19, 2013) was an American political activist from San Francisco, California who, in 1961, became the first openly gay candidate for public office in the United States. He is also remembered for performing as a drag queen at the Black Cat Bar and as the founder of the Imperial Court System.

[...]

Sarria became the first openly gay candidate for public office in the United States when he ran for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1961. In 1964 Sarria declared himself “Empress José I, The Widow Norton” and founded the Imperial Court System, which grew to become an international association of charitable organizations.

Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
