If you couldn’t get a ticket to SF Food Wars Mac n’ Cheese battle, the Battle of the Empanadas will likely be just as fattening.
I’m putting my money on Chile Lindo.

If you like to combining Taming of the Shrew and Tecate tallboys, be sure to head to Dolores Park at 1pm tomorrow for Woman’s Will’s performance.
Heartened to see a few fine young men outfitted in their Mission cycling* jerseys, allll the way out in the wilds of west Marin. Maybe they’re lost.

Mission Comics and Art’s blog dropped a little rumor 2 months ago** that a wine bar is looking at moving into 988 Valencia, also known as the former prospective American Apparel location:
“This particular landord has two adjoining properties that he’d prefer to lease together, if he can’t do that, lease to two separate business at the same time. Right now, he has a wine bar interested in leasing the larger space with the roll up door, which could be very complementary to my business and another incentive to stay open later then the typical comic bookstore or art gallery for that matter.” (link)
We’ve been hearing this rumor at Mission Mission for a few months now, but no one was able to ever substantiate it. We’ve even heard talks of indoor bicycle parking at the bar; maybe that rumor is true too?
I really hope they serve Little Boomey. That would be classy.
** Sorry, I’m such a bad “journalist.” I should have seen this sooner.
Laura brings us news that a new comic book store is opening soon on 20th and San Carlos:
“New store at 3520 20th. Mission Comics and Art. Talked to owner Leef. Super nice. Opens in less than a month! Real comic shop in the Mission! Dorks rule!”
Dorks do rule. (Mission Comics and Art)
While Golden Gate Park is obviously not in the Mission, this awesome poster was, so I’ll allow it.
SF Zine Fest. August 22 & 23rd. 11-6. Zines making out with each other!
It’s almost impossible not to smile as some deranged axe-murdered is swinging his weapon-of-choice into your frontal lobe.
(Thanks Zara! – Found at 24th and York)

Comm Ave.: If people were allowed to leave this much trash on Valencia St., I'm pretty sure the Creme Brulee Man would storm City Hall with a bomb strapped to his chest.
I recently went for a stroll through Boston’s hipster favela, Allston/Brighton, and I could not stop thinking about how goddamn clean the Mission is. I know people portray the Mission to be one huge dumpster, but have you ever walked around another city? We at least have weekly street sweeping and the DPW, at a minimum, feigns caring about gum on the sidewalk. Yeah, Dolores Park can get kind of shitty sometimes, but if you want to have a park where people can get blitzed off practically every substance known to man with very little hassle, don’t expect the guy slurring his words to remember to throw away his box of Mike and Ikes. Now, I’m going for a walk down Capp st. while tossing styrophone containers in the gutter and pissing on people’s garages.
In other news, Allston/Brighton has some great stencil art. I took a bunch of pictures, but of course they all look like crap. This flickr set is way better.

Okay, what did I miss?
“16th street Bart station lock down. Trains not moving, police with rifles everywhere.” (link)
UPDATE: Eve over at the SF Appeal got the low-down. Apparently there was an attempted assault “in the immediate area” but the suspect fled before the police showed up.
Maybe it was the entire bottle of Charles Shaw that I drank at Dolores Park Movie Nite, but I do appreciate this shark art.
