Finally figured out how to listen to DSTVV’s tapes in the car

Took some doing, but it was awesome, just like DSTVV were at the Bender’s happy hour the other day. People keep complaining that the cassette format is making such a comeback, but I’m into it. Hassles can be fun!

(Good work, Nattles!)

UPDATE: This might work too.

Unexpected fucking awesome blast from the past: Mission Street Food’s game-changing PB&J reappears for one night only

There it is.

Before Mission Chinese Food Paris, before Mission Chinese Food NYC, before MISSION CHINESE FOOD for goodness’ sake (!), before Mission Bowling Club, before the Mission Street Food book, before Mission Street Food moved into Lung Shan — there was Mission Street Food in a little taco trailer parked at 21st and Mission. And this sandwich, the PB&J — pork belly and jicama — was the first thing any of us ever ate at their very first night in business way back in 2008. It was fucking awesome.

MSF’s menu changed every week, but this gem reappeared every now and then. And everybody was elated when it did. We had it for the last time back in June of 2010, on MSF’s last night in business. A sad day.

Fast forward to this past Friday night, in a different corner of the neighborhood, at The Galley’s gala anniversary party: There’s a pork belly sandwich on the specials menu and Chef Justin says to me, he says, “Imma make you the pork belly.” I was like, “I’m a little stuffed after [guest chef Rocky's] frybread and [guest chef Guillermo's] pretzel sandwich.” And Justin says, “Imma make you the pork belly.” A few minutes later, it came out, I took one look at it, and I nearly wept. “Is that–” “Yep.” And it was. And I ate the whole thing and felt like a kid again.

Noise Pop 2013, SF’s own multi-day, multi-venue music and culture festival, continues through the weekend at multiple venues around town. Off the top of my head, I recommend the following:

  1. DSTVV at the Bay Bridged Happy Hour at Bender’s today at 5pm sharp
  2. The Noise Pop Culture Club on Saturday afternoon
  3. Future Twin opening for YACHT at Slim’s on Saturday night

    C’mon to dance, baby!

This looks awesome. What more can I say? The Facebook invite has tons of YouTube clips posted on it, to give you an idea of what to expect. Here’s a good one:

Debaser’s 5th anniversary party tonight celebrates the music of the year 2000

This morning I awoke to the sound of about 50 Facebook notification dings in a row. Quite a symphony. I thought the USA was under attack or Matt Damon died or something, but, no, it was just *everyone I know* going nuts about tonight’s special anniversary edition of Debaser.

Here’s what’s cool: Debaser is the ’90s party, right? Right. But tonight, they’re breaking the rules and getting down with the year 2000. DJ Jamie Jams tells us what to expect:

we’re going to try and mega-mix through all of the various versions of late 90′s-early 00′s fear of the future.

from post-hardcore, pre-emo garage type stuff like the white stripes / hives / refused, to late period indie stuff like belle and sebastian / moldy peaches / magnetic fields, to french robot house stuff like daft punk / cassius / les rhythmes digitales, to early electro-clash stuff like miss kittin / peaches / fischerspooner and a sizeable dollup of futuristic halftimed hip hop ala timbaland / neptunes.

we’ll probably throw a couple of other uber-specifically dated signposts in there like an early mash-up or two. probably a good deal of ghetto-tech. oh yeah, and the obvious big time mainstream type stuff… radiohead, bjork, beck, jay z, missy, outkast, dre, eminem, snoop. maybe even a little jt and britney.

Holy mackerel. RSVP and invite your friends!

Also, Jamie recommends we enjoy some classic Conan:

Haçeteria, the best dance party in town, returns to Slate this Friday

DJ Tristes Tropiques of the Haç crew enumerates some of the party’s highlights:

    +asphyxiating amounts of fog
+blinding lasers (usually in a good way)
    +a semi-outdoor smoking cage
+exquisite restrooms with top notch plumbing (not a joke)
+loud music from 1992, some of which might be decent or nostalgia inducing
    +somewhat-ok drink deals (i think there’s a pabst tall boy deal) &
    fancy cocktails

Bango! I never have as much fun dancing as I do at Haçeteria. And Slate is awesome btw, regardless of the space’s previous incarnations. RSVP and invite your friends!

And then get dizzy to this jam by this month’s special guests:

New twists on the Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned at Hog & Rocks (pictured above with a duck skewer) has long been my favorite Old Fashioned , so I’m intrigued bar manager Michael Lazar has added a whole new section to their cocktail menu called “Pimp My Old Fashioned.” (Obviously, they always do it the right way: no muddled fruit, no ginger ale, etc.) Here it is:

    PIMP MY OLD FASHIONED

Ch. briat hors d’age armagnac, gum syrup, bitters, grated nutmeg

    Anticuado $16

    Oaxaca (Phil Ward) $16
Tres agaves reposado, del maguey ‘minero’ mezcal, agave gum

    orange bitters

    Biographical Info:

"I joked that living in the Mission would be the end of me. And there were nights where it felt like the case.

One night I went out with my friend Allan to the bar that no one goes to on 16th Street, where I lost half my drink and money on the dance floor. Later we skated down 16th to Evelyn Lee, where I fell off my board and landed on my head as the 22 bus sped past behind me. A sobering moment. At the bar, I sulked and nursed my wounds until Allan put on Amy Winehouse’s 'Valerie.' We danced, he dipped me, and I felt better."
