Mission Baroque, SF’s newest early music ensemble, tugging your heartstrings

From the official invite to last night’s performance:

Mission Baroque, San Francisco’s newest early music ensemble, will be providing a program of seventeenth century vocal gems that tug at the heartstrings.

And they did! This one’s called “Dido’s Lament”:

Mission Baroque rules!

Winged insectoid invader terrorizes the Mission

Seriously, I saw it and got all flustered for a second. This thing is clearly not of this earth.

Literary meetup at the Make-Out Room this Saturday!

This Saturday, the Believer and Tumblr are throwing a reading/party/meetup at the Make-Out Room. The reading includes a book launch by Sheila Heti and readings from several Tumblr writers, including our pals Melissa and Mills (and possibly Mills’ dogs). Party starts at 6pm!

Car Cage on Hoff Street

Car Cage

Right before I snapped this I walked past two kids having a water balloon fight on the sidewalk just outside the park on Hoff. One of their balloons missed its intended target and hit the ground, splattering me a little, but mostly spraying an unmarked police car rolling through the alley. The kid who had successfully dodged the shot said “Whoa dude, you hit a cop!” The plain clothed officer said “Watch out.” and rolled on. I thought to myself, way to be vigilant, small child.

What would it be like if the Transbay Tube was transparent?

Our pal Kiran was just wondering:

whenever i go through the bay on BART i wish they would’ve made the tunnel transparent so we could see all the the cool underwater shit going on under there. i imagine it to be filled with tons of interesting little sea critters & the water to be all pretty & blue….but then i think about about & realistically, it probably would be the total opposite & filled with dead things & all green & murky & stuff i really don’t wanna see. so then i say ok & stare back at my ipod & continue avoiding awkward eye contact with all the people around me. It’d be trippy though, I bet.

Windy day in the Mission makes for epic dubstep video

Local filmmaker Kate Imbach harnessed the power of nature (and some video editing capabilities) and made some magic:

Dang, it’s even better than that M. Night Shyamalan movie I loved so much!

The Story of DESCENDENTS/ALL

Perhaps you’ve heard of DESCENDENTS, who are only one of the most influential punk rock bands ever.  Apparently, they’re also one of the most under-documented bands around, and two filmakers aimed to change that 2 years ago with a feature-length documentary!  40 interviews later, they’re almost ready to release FILMAGE: The Story of DESCENDENTS/ALL.

Check out the trailer above to get a taste for what’s in store, and stay posted on any updates to this rad project here.

Rapists on the loose

Late last night we received this email:

Violent Rape @ 19th n capp

Sunday night, one A.M, Nineteenth and Capp. She was walking to her home two blocks away from Bender’s. She was dragged into a driveway by two unknown assailants after leaving Bender’s. They took all her cash and both of them raped her, so severely that she now has eight stitches in her cervix. The entire lower half of her body is black and blue.

The rape was reported at SFGH as well as in a police report, and also to SF WAR. If necessary, my friend is willing to provide hospital records with her name blacked out as evidence.

We are all so shaken by this event and feel powerless to do anything. We decided, with the approval of the victim, to maybe try to get this information out via the community blogs, so people can take the necessary precautions when walking home.

Today the following, which includes a description of the alleged rapists, started making its way around Facebook:

Okay people. I need your help, and this shit is important. One of my friends was VIOLENTLY ASSAULTED and RAPED by two men she did not know Sunday night at 19th and Capp. You wanna get graphic? I’m talking stitches in the cervix. With her permission, I’ve written to the two local mission blogs, asking them to publish this incident. Nothing. Police help? NOTHING. Then today my friend saw two dudes walking down the street matching the descriptions of the attackers. One had scratches on his face that correspond with the attack. Two Hispanic men, between 20-25. One stocky, one lean, one with obvious scratches on his face. So help me out. Share this info. At the very least, maybe we can tell women in the area to be on the alert. Any other suggestions?? I feel helpless and ANGRY.

Update: Mission Loc@l spoke with the victim and has more information.

Pedestrians, please be wary of this menace. He’s basically doing EVERYTHING wrong. Who knows, he may even be on meth.

BurritoBot, a burrito-making robot, coming soon to a future near you

By now, we’re all familiar with the complaints of how New York sucks at burritos. A graduate design student at NYU has taken the matter into his own hands, and has invented a robot that makes customizable burritos using 3D printing technology.

Unlike the TacoCopter, the BurritoBot does not appear to be a joke. Just check out this accompanying stop motion video, which hints at a future Kickstarter campaign:

Now, how long until I can train one to make me Taqueria Cancun veggie burritos, black beans/no dairy/extra salsa?
