Knife fight on 24th Street

From our pal Lauren Mc:

I just called 911 for a knife fight on 24th street. Suspect has been apprehended. Fighting bystander effect one day at a time.

Bystander effect is no joke! I watched 30 people see this going down and NO ONE was on a phone calling the police.

And her friends reminisce:

-I saw two dudes at 24th and Shotwell fighting once. One had a cobblestone and the other had a knife. Cops broke it up bearing shotguns.

-My neighbor called 911 for a knife fight between two woman on mission street. Here’s the shocker… The lady who got stabbed told the cops that my neighbor stabbed her. He was taken in and released few hours later. Some crazy ass people out there…

Nice work Lauren! Good thing there are no Lululemon stores in the Mission!

Dolores Park, just the people

The artist Jenny Odell explains:

[R]ather than hanging out in the actual, physical Dolores Park, I’ve been spending hours cutting out every single person in the very crowded Google Earth view of Dolores Park.

I guess we’re a little late to this as it showed as part of a group show at Intersection for the Arts in October. But better late than never. Read on for more explanation and a look at all the people on Pier 39.

UPDATE: The show is up through mid-January!

Mission Mission Gift Guide: Winter fruit and summer fruit

These are new prints by artist Claire Nereim. Find these and more in her Etsy shop, or I’m pretty sure Needles + Pens might have one or two of her forever calendars for sale.

Five floors of basement

Sports Basement has a whole lot of product, so to help us figure out what the heck is going on, as soon as we walk in they show us what’s happening on each floor. In diorama form!

I wish every building I walked into had something like this, using matchbox cars and paper people cutouts to let me know what I was getting into.

Benefit party this Thursday for victims of fire caused by allegedly negligent landlord

Mission Local last week reported on the fire:

The building that caught fire Thursday morning, critically injuring two, has a long history of building code violations and a pending report in which it is “deemed unsafe,” public records show.

In a notice of violation dated Jan. 5, 2009 — a complaint that’s still pending and unresolved — the box labeled “unsafe building” is checked and, among nine violations, “there are no smoke detectors,” the report states.

That proved disastrous on the morning of Dec. 1, when a fire broke out in the upstairs unit at 3356 24th St. Residents said that others who smelled the fire woke them up just after 4 a.m. No one remembered hearing any alarms go off.

Twenty-three tenants living in two adjacent buildings were evacuated.

Read on.

The benefit party will have music, food and a photobooth, as well as a raffle and other entertainments. RSVP and invite your friends!
