How good are the sandwiches at Rhea’s Deli?

Pretty damn good, I guess.

Dollar oyster-eating San Franciscans don’t know how good they have it

Last week San Francisco’s first and only ham and oyster bar announces dollar oysters, all day, five days a week, one of which is Sunday, until January 1, and I don’t hear about it until now? San Franciscans may not know that dollar oysters are not a universal phenomenon. In LA, where I am writing this, the concept doesn’t exist. When you google “dollar oysters” you just get a bunch of Yelp threads where someone asks “Where do you get dollar oysters in LA?” and someone responds, “I dunno, but a bunch of places in SF do it.”

So spread the word, people. Personally, I’m driving up Wednesday morning for Thanksgiving, so if anyone wants to meet me at Hog & Rocks around 2, I’ll be there.

Thanks to GGRA for the tip.

Beloved late-night bacon-wrapped chicken-and-waffle sandwich coming soon to Duc Loi Supermarket

The popular pop-up shop is called Soul Groove. They did their thing at the Corner until the the Corner went kaput. Now Eater SF delivers the good news:

Back in the day, Mission Street Food’s Mission Burger proved there was something magical about serving a tricked out Heston Blumenthal-style beef patty at the deli counter of an Asian supermarket. Now today Eater receives word that a new pop-up shall carry on the Duc Loi pop-up baton: the fried chicken and waffle sandwich makers of Soul Groove.

Vietnamese Thanksgiving dinner with Rice Paper Scissors this Saturday

Those gastronomically intrepid gals from Rice Paper Scissors are back again, and this time they’re bringing the party inside from the street to get out of the cold with a unique version of a classic:

Our first underground dinner will be centered around Laque Duck, a Vietnamese take on Peking Duck. We’re also making duck confit imperial rolls, wok fried chinese green beans, and coconut sorbet using fresh ‘nutz from Oscar on 22nd Street.

If everything goes as planned, Laque Duck will be the new turkey.  Check out all the details here!

What’s up with that new bakery at 21st and Folsom?

You know, the one with the awning. Check out Lizzy‘s review:

I just went across the street to see what’s up with the new bakery. As I came out I was startled by someone yelling, although that’s not an unusual thing to encounter outside my house.

A man with long, scraggly hair, a toothless mouth (I was going to write grin but it wasn’t accurate), and matching leather jacket and pants was riding a bike down 21st Street. When I say riding, I mean he was sitting on the seat with one hand on the handlebars, propelling himself with one foot on the ground like a skateboard rather than pedaling, and swerving wildly. He was using his other hand to hold a cell phone and screaming into it: “YOU FUCKING BITCH. YOU’RE DONE!”

Southpaw BBQ finally opens on Mission Street

Southpaw BBQ, finally set to open tomorrow, had an “Industry Night” soft opening on Monday. I was able to try their pulled pork shoulder that you could throw on a slider and mix with a bunch of sauces, as well as some of their house-made blue cheese chips.

Drink-wise, I snagged a modded whiskey sour with a ginger infusion — really smokey and good — and the Sazerac, which had some sort of toasted lemon twist. The bartenders know what’s up with whiskey, which is always a bonus.

The spot has a long table in front, about 5-6 small tables plus bar seating. You can see right into the kitchen and watch the cooks prep the food, and the exposed brick makes it cozy, plus they have two flat screen TVs to enjoy. If I wasn’t having my birthday at Jack’s tomorrow, I’d be back in there first thing, but I’ll definitely roll back next week and try more barbecue.

Arinell booze break

What happens when the rock & roll pizza slingers at Arinell win a $25 lotto scratcher?  Well, if this past Saturday night is any indication, this calls for celebration in the form of a 15-minute booze break!  It was mildly excruciating to see that whole pizza just laying there waiting to be eaten while we were locked out of the shop, but it was well worth it to see the boys in such rare form when they returned, hi-fiving patrons and generally having a merry old time.

Wait a minute, do I really want my pizza slingers hi-fiving patrons?
