A Day’s Messing: NYC bike messenger silent film

Our buddy Jeff Seal just made this:

A delite-ful picture film full of fun and folly. It stars a Brooklyn ‘bicycle messenger’ and a mysterious lovely lady! Will he be able win her over or will he be stopped short by the gypsy’s curse? Running time: 14:43. Rated PG-13 for magic, unsafe cycling, and adult situations.

Mission police offset lack of solutions with raffle prizes

The Mission Police took a beating at Tuesday’s community meeting concerning increasing violence in the neighborhood.

On the bright side, they had a fun raffle during the event:

Eventually, Corrales managed to lighten the mood – just in time for the raffle. Latecomers and newbies rushed to get their names in for the monumental door prizes – police station pens, a mug and two Giants tickets.

“Can I borrow your pen?” one man asked the winner of a Mission Station pen.

“I came just in time for door prizes!” said DJ Brown who later won the tickets.

Congrats to DJ Brown and the other winners!

Tagging the shit out of a whole goddamned building (FUCK)

Edmundo spotted this building blanketed in a delightful Fruity Pebbles inspired color scheme on 16th and Carolina. Say what you will, that takes some serious time and dedication. That guy is probably still icing his wrist.

Here’s a before shot:

Update:

GG points out that this was a promotional party that Sean Parker threw for Spotify. A snip from the SFGate article:

The extravagant setting felt like a throwback to the glory days of the dot-com era. The exterior of the building was covered entirely by professional graffiti artists. Inside, makeshift chandeliers dangled from the converted warehouse roof. There were several open bars stocked with a dizzying array of top-shelf liquor; two roasted whole hogs; a butcher from Parma, Italy, slicing prosciutto; endless trays of sushi; and a veritable mountain of seafood, courtesy of McCalls catering.

I feel dirty now.

Brass Menazeri: balkan brass first Thursdays coming to the Mission

If you think New Orleans is where you’ll find the best brass bands, you might want to take a second look at Southeastern Europe.

Balkan music is high-energy, virtuosic brass/percussion at it’s best and it has been finding it’s way into more American acts. You may have heard the influence in the music coming from that moody New Mexico kid Beirut, who is apparently more popular now than the actual Lebanese city which bares the same name.

San Francisco has its own Balkan Brass band, Brass Menazeri, who have been tearing it up for years. In fact, they are probably one of the only groups of their caliber in the states. Their shows are dancey and fun. Here’s a clip of them on Chasing the Moon.

If you’re into this stuff, starting October they are performing first Thursdays at El Valenciano. You know, that place you always walk by and wonder, “what goes on in there, anyway?”. Turns out, it’s actually a beautiful room with a lot of charm and an excellent dance floor.

Thursday, October 6, 2011 Brass Menazeri – now every first thursday!!!!

Mission Market mural bombed

In all caps, no less.

Bummer, if only this dude used the Revolution Cafe bathroom right around the corner first, he may have decided instead to “study graff. history & go tag a bank.” Guess we’re stuck with this for now.

Update:

Aaand it’s back already, according to Mission Community Market, nice going guys!

The Twilight Zone: SF

As someone who occasionally works at home, I know this bizarre phenomenon far too well:

[Killing My Lobster via Boing Boing]

Desperate bike thieves possibly using C4 explosives

… either that, or there are some bad drivers near the Zeitgeist bike racks.

Zeitgeist is up for best SF bar in some poll by SFist, by the way. They are up against Smuggler’s Cove, which has fruity tropical drinks and pirate stuff. Fair comparison? Vote for them, if they haven’t already alienated you with their surly demeanor.

LA Times: gang violence in a ‘hipster haven’

The LA Times picked up on the recent gang violence in the Mission and was quick to point out that it is a gentrifying neighborhood. “What a contrast!” they say. Nothing new to you guys if you’ve read any Mission Mission comments, I’m sure. However, if lines like this:

On a recent evening, tattooed youth with yoga mats pushed past lines of workers wiring their day’s wages to relatives in Latin America.

strike you as mind-blowing perspective, then by all means read on.

ATM sword

YMFY spotted this sword at the Wells Fargo ATM on Mission and 22nd. He wanted to pick it up and swing it around, but thought better of it. When he returned later, it was gone.

Bummer, dude. The sword of Wells Fargodor only presents itself to those who are truly worthy of low APR and bonus rewards. You missed out.

Rhea’s feature on Check Please

Here is the clip of Rhea’s on Check Please Bay Area last week in case you missed it:

I really don’t think I’d spoil anything by saying all the reviews were glowing, but there was one new thing I took away from the feature:

It’s pronounced “Ray’s” not “Ray-ah’s”.

Woah.
