Mission Chinese Food

Mission Street Food’s next move has been announced: Mission Chinese Food. Starting in July, they’ll operate out of Lung Shan seven nights a week, offering awesome Chinese food. And THEY DELIVER. Eater SF has all the details.

The big question is this: Will the lighting be pleasant like at Mission Street Food, or harsh like at Lung Shan?

Why You Just Can't Bring Yourself to Eat at Ti Couz

Cultural commentator generic explained in a post last night:

It’s 50 yards away from me, and by all accounts the food is great. But the name creeps me out.

Because it reminds him of “cooze.” And then in reply to a reply:

I can’t think of white trash porn while I’m eating a crepe. Deal. Breaker.

To this I say, how about a salad? Ti Couz’s big bowls of salad are maybe even more delightful than the crepes. And healthier!

Mission Community Block Party This Saturday

Mission Community Block Party takes place this Saturday, June 19th 11am-3pm in front of Revolution Cafe on 22nd and Bartlett. There should be lots of food, live music, and dance performances. Full details here.

Also, after Sirron Norris and CUBA made nice last week regarding the mural on that corner, it looks like they will be inviting YOU to take part of their new mural collaboration! Please try to resist the urge to hide a bunch of dongs in there.

Come paint a piece of our new community mural! Anyone and everyone can come paint their part of a mural! A blank canvas for you to paint your piece of the Mission! Artists Sirron Norris and CUBA will return afterward to tie it together into a unified mural. All are welcome to contribute their part of a mission mural! On the side of Revolution Cafe.

A Few Changes At Zeitgeist

If you go to Zeitgeist right now the front door is blocked off and the new entrance is on the Valencia side of the patio. According to the doorman they had to make some upgrades or repairs which cast light on a few other code violations and now the whole place is getting a facelift. It seems the biggest changes are the removal of the porta potties with the addition of actual bathrooms over in the far (Southeast) corner of the outdoor area, and that the bar will now be open to the outside, so you can order from the deck under the overhang. I wasn’t sure if the original entrance would be restored or if we’ll be strolling directly onto the patio from the street for good.

It sounds like the overall flow of the space will be different, but that it won’t have much effect on the atmosphere that we all love to hate. People will still come by looking to have a nice chat with the bartender while they mix up their Harvey Wallbanger and end up running home in a tizzy to get on Yelp and write about wishing there was a way to give a bar no stars. Which is exactly, I assume, how we all want it.

Los Jarritos Restaurant Sued by Beverage Company; Forced to Change Name

Everybody, meet SanJalisco, formerly known as Los Jarritos.  MM reader Mark P. stopped by this weekend and noticed something was amiss:

Just stopped by Los Jarritos at 20th and South Van Ness, a great family restaurant that’s been at that corner at least 20 years. Sign on the door says they’re changing their name. I asked why. They said they’d been sued by the Jarritos soft drink company.

Indeed, despite the fact that owner Dolores Reyes opened the place back in 1988, around the same time that multi-national Novamex started importing their drinks to the US, and that jarritos themselves are actually small earthen clay pots popular in Reyes’ home state Jalisco; the beverage maker nonetheless remained undeterred to ensure sole possession of the name even after losing an earlier court decision in 2007

Reyes, lacking the considerable legal budget enjoyed by Novamex, couldn’t afford to keep up the battle in court, much less the $50,000 that the corporation wanted in order for the small restaurant to keep its moniker, and eventually decided to relent and change the name.  In all, it appears that almost 30 similar restaurants around the country with some version of Jarritos in their name were targeted.

You’d be doing yourself a favor by going to stop by and show your support thanks to the delicious menu featuring breakfast chilaquiles and other fabulous platano creations.  Pair that with their refreshing michelada for a fantastic hungover Sunday brunch that gives Boogaloos a run for its money.  Just don’t expect them to be selling Jarritos sodas anymore, though.

All Your Old Faves at Mission Street Food's FINAL NIGHT

Since news of the forthcoming Commonwealth and changes at Mission Burger broke, the question loomed: Will MSF continue to exist?

The answer is: Probably, but not until after an indefinite hiatus. Mission Street Food as we know it is closing up shop after Saturday’s performance. They are, however, going out with a bang. Chef Anthony bids us adieu:

I speak on behalf of the entire staff when I say it’s been a pleasure serving you and getting to know you. Thanks for your enthusiasm, patience and support. We intend to eventually start MSF up again in some capacity and hope to see you again then, but for now, come by for one last PB & J or MSF Rice, or come try your first Chinito or Squid & Marrow – the new classics.

B³ Brings Burgers and Wine Till 2am

I happened to walk by this place while the friendly new proprieters were repainting the interior (the yellow brick road motif will not survive the transition) and beckoning passerby to stop inside and sample the sausage.  The habañero kielbasa was quite a treat, but the real intrigue lies with the brown sugar bourbon bacon.

Hence the working title for B-cubed, the new burger and wine bar set to take over the allegedly cursed former Senses location on Valencia by 22nd in about 10 days.  Seeking to be known as “the winemaker’s speakeasy,” the idea is to offer hard-to-find ridiculously good quality vintages at prices that people can afford regularly.  You can get it by the taste, glass, bottle, or case!

If they keep finding stuff like the Beaucanon Napa Cab Sav, with its black tea and tobacco musk, or the intoxicating Hesperian Cab Franc that I sipped, there’s a great chance that the curse will be lifted and this spot will become an habitual neighborhood hangout (especially since they’ll be open until 2am).

Now all we need is Zaytoon to complete its 2 year metamorphosis and along with Lucca’s, El Majahual, and Beretta, this will be a power bloc once again!

Mission Burritos Hit Canada

While up in Vancouver, BC this past weekend to play a show with some rad Canadian punk bands, we came across TACO DEL MAR, alleged purveyors of the elusive Mission-style burrito.  Unfortunately, we were unable to sample said Mission-style burrito due to the fact that the “taqueria” closes at 11pm on a Saturday!

If they can’t even get authentic operational hours right, I shudder to imagine what sort of blasphemy they might be trying to pass off as a burrito.  The fact that their mascot appears to be a chili pepper with a dirty sanchez wearing a sombrero does little to comfort me either.

The Tastiest Little Breakfast in Town Now Confined to Weekends

Good thing it’s Saturday! Reader Jason fills us in on some bittersweet news about what some have called the tastiest little breakfast town:

Just an update – They gave up on their amazingly tasty breakfast. They now open at 11:30 Mon-Fri, and 9AM on Sat & Sun.

Here’s the text of a note posted to their door:

To our breakfast customers:

We are no longer be open for breakfast Monday through Friday.

Come visit us on the weekend for brunch. We have a full breakfast menu including your favorite breakfast sandwich and four barrel coffee.

Brunch served Saturday and Sunday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
