Mission Farmer Enters HuffPo's Hot Farmer Contest

farmerdave

Listen up, the Mission district!  We need to rally together for a very special cause!

Local hot farmer David Stockhausen has been entered in The Huffington Post’s Hot Farmer contest!  Dave (no idea if he goes by Dave btw) was at #1 just this morning but has somehow slipped to #2.  We need to bump that shit back up!

Peep Farmer Dave here.  And here’s a li’l blurb about the gent:

David Stockhausen is the founder of Amyitis Gardens, a community-based farming project in San Francisco. The Amyitis mission is to educate and empower the Mission District community through food and farming. Amyitis links neighbors with neighborhood restaurants by cultivating backyard food gardens and exchanging the local produce for discounts on food and drinks. Amyitis provides local residents with the tools to farm their own yards, and restaurants with the most local produce possible- grown as close as a few blocks away.

My buddy Katie from Amyitis tells me produce grown in Mission backyards is then sold to places like The Corner and Weird Fish.  Yum.

The Mission positively framed in the national news, people!  Get on board already!  All you have to do is click a 10 on HuffPo here and we’re golden.

Good luck, David!

Attention Value Customers: Malai Thai is Close

Luckily they can make better food than signs.

Luckily they can make better food than signs.

MrEricSir brings us news that Malai Thai is closed up through the end of the month.  Worst of all, the sign failed to tell us why.  My brain tells me it is for remodeling, but my heart knows it is because the owners want to be the next people to jump on the “let’s open a mediocre pizza place around Valencia Street” train.   OH WHAT IT’S TRUE.

Outbreak of Flatulence Has Neighbors Mobilizing

Farts basically act as a perfume at 16th and Mission, so don't hate.

Farts basically act as a perfume at 16th and Mission, so don't hate.

From “Senor Hair”:

New (at least to me) signage in a storefront window on Mission @ 16th. I guess somebody’s looking to clean up the neighborhood. Let’s hear it for modest starts.

Budget Rock 8 Starts Tonight

Hey now, this looks pretty decent:

Budget Rock 8 starts tonight with a kick-off party at the Eagle Tavern starring Cheap Time and Hunx and His Punx, and ends Sunday night with hearthrobs the Gris Gris and Thee Oh Sees at Bottom of the Hill.  The festival features a collection of shows from some pretty big deal Bay Area garage-influenced bands.

Shows move back and forth between Thee Parkside and Bottom of the Hill Friday on.  The biggest hoopla of the weekend appears to be a pair of reunion shows by The Mummies Saturday.  Catch ‘em while they’re hot!

I’ve been meaning to see Hunx and His Punx at some point, as I find their music videos mesmerizing.  An example:

Phewf.  Yeah?

Vegan Cupcakes Rule the Roost at SF Food Wars

blue_ribbon

I know this is hella old news, but it was hard for me to get all pumped to post about cupcakes when I was all fevery n’ stuff.  But yeah, apparently these vegan suckers took first place at the last SF Food Wars and they look reasonably edible.  Blue ribbon baker Cinnaholic has even published the recipe so you can attempt to imitate greatness at home.

(hat tip vegansaurus!)

Fan Mail: Appropriating third world food and selling it on the streets to white crackers in sf

This nugget of win just came screaming into my inbox.

In response to the Magic Curry Kart starting a new Vietnamese porridge venture:

fuck white crackers with their start business loans and white cracker investors appropriating third world food and selling it on the streets to white crackers in sf and getting published in magazines and all you white yuppie/hipster cracker asses praising their bland ass versions in your yelp reviews and shitty cracker blogs. fuck you chef.

TCB: The Motion Picture

I know I’ve already gushed about TCB Courier, but their new commercial is killer.  Fixies, grabbing a pizza box while riding, diving into Bender’s to deliver said pizza and the whole production is topped off with some badass metal music.

Mission & Valencia (1886 – Present)

Wha?  What are you doing here?  You should be off reading Burrito Justice, a blog that does actual RESEARCH.

saloon

This morning, B.J. did a bang-up job of outlining the past 123 years on Valencia/Mission, in honor of El Rio’s 31st birthday.  I suggest you take a look at this fantastic post, especially if you love San Francisco history (HELLO!  Remember how much you loved  Milk?).  Thanks to Burrito Justice for picking up our slack.

[Note: The bar in the image above is totally not El Rio.  What, I have time to comb through archives all of a sudden?]

Fashion Watch: Spooky's Beheaded Unicorn Shirt is the Best Shirt Ever Made

This t shirt has nothing to do with the Mission but everything to do with being awesome.

Hella Old Interview With Adam Infanticide

Screen shot 2009-10-21 at 7.02.48 AM

I figure if I can still unironically enjoy Biggie’s “Mo Money, Mo Problems,” I can link to a 5-year-old interview with my new favorite sticker artist (via Wooster Collective):

What is your favorite thing to do on your day off from work?: art or sex, but even though I don’t have a job right now, I still don’t seem to do either as much as I’d like.
What is your favorite color?: green or purple or something.
Who (or what) do you love?: idiot art, copyright infringement, music, efficient public transportation, soul sistas, Mary Hopkin, vandalism, my friends, etc. I don’t actually love: fascism, racial profiling, police brutality, prison labor.
What other talent would most like to have? I’d like to be able to interact normally with other people and/or play the piano hella good.
