There’s already a benefit show being organized for tomorrow to benefit the victims of last night’s fire in La Lengua. The residents of the building lost nearly all their possessions and are without a place to live. Here’s the full release from facebook:

Hey Ya’ll

Many of you saw or heard about the devastating fire that happened on Mission and Valencia last night. The house that took the brunt of the damage was actually a house full of amazing friends who many of you may know and love. It looks as though the fire destroyed most or all of their possessions and made the house uninhabitable for the foreseeable future.

Currently the residents are without homes, clothes, and other basic necessities and could really use assistance getting back on their feet. The four people who lost their home are all amazing people who have been active vibrant parts of our queer community in San Francisco and have always shown their strongest support for the needs of others. Now its our turn to show our support and bring together the generosity and might of our community to support them in this time of need.

El Rio has generously allowed us to take over their front room on Friday night for an emergency benefit to raise funds for these four amazing folks to purchase the basics they need to stay afloat. Please please please spread the word about this event on facebook and elsewhere and come out, dig deep and share your $$ with folks who really need it right now. At the door there will be someone collecting cash to be distributed directly to the victims of the fire, so just make sure that person gets your donation, come in, have some drinks hangout on the patio and dance a bit if you like.

Also, El Rio will also be donating 100% of their bar proceeds from 8-9pm directly to the four folks affected so come early, donate and drink.

Jordan misplaced his bike on Wednesday. And by misplaced, I mean “misplaced” into the greasy hands of a no-good thief somewhere in the Mission. It was stolen is what I’m saying.

Anyway, he wants it back and was hoping to get the word out:

My incredible Rivendell Atlantis was stolen from me in the mission district on Wednesday. It has a distinct look, especially with the large saddlebag and matching front rack bag I had on it.

This bike has sentimental value to me as a gift from my now-departed grandmother. I have proof of ownership and know the serial number. There is a $200 reward for finding the bike if I’m able to get it back. Any advice on how I might track it down is greatly appreciated as well.

We’ve all been there, and it stinks. Give us a shout if you’ve seen it or know anything, and we’ll put you in touch with Jordan.

Didn’t get your fill of hackneyed hipster humor this week? You poor thing! Well check this baby out. Of course, the first things I thought when I saw this were,”uhhh, that is not a single speed bike,” and, “aren’t those shots of Mars Vintage and Rasputin in Berkeley?” I guess that makes me a you-know-what-ster.

Chef Kevin Kroger, formerly of Monk’s Kettle, was really flattered when we lamented the loss of his amazing mac & cheese masterpiece. So much so, that yesterday he decided to post a “making of” feature of the dish on his blog. His secret? Put some beer in it.

In addition to that, he shows you how to make “Chocolate Pop Rock Bars”. Seriously? This man is a visionary.

The Dave Hillyard Rocksteady 7 played an afternoon show at Bender’s last year and they are making a stop there again this Sunday.

This all-star group features members from the two of the best traditional ska revival groups of the ’90s, the Slackers and Hepcat. They will be joined by living legend and percussionist Larry McDonald of the Skatalites, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, and Lee Perry. Expect heavy instrumental reggae and rocksteady sounds with Dave’s signature jazzy chops.

Free rocksteady and BBQ! Does it get any better? The show starts at 1:30pm 3pm at Bender’s on 19th and S. Van Ness. Here’s the event page, and a snippet from the last show:

Reader Katie spotted this notice on the side of the Victoria Theater yesterday:

Looks like someone took issue with the historic Alber’s Flapjack Flour mural on the side of the theater on 16th and Capp! Soon when you want to “look for the miner” you’ll have to “look” elsewhere.

I can only guess that some local tightwads just can’t stand the fact that fattening breakfast foods, such as flapjacks (which are basically super-thick and delicious pancakes) are being marketed to children, particularly those that go to the nearby Marshall Elementary School.

Sure, it may not be a part of a balanced breakfast, but have you seen a picture of a balanced breakfast? There’s like two cups of juice, milk, toast, and like ten other things in addition to your cereal. Nobody I know ate balanced breakfasts and we turned out fine.

What’s next? A war on bacon? Home fries? Scrambled eggs that contain yolks? All I know is that I will fight to the death for my right to eat Cinnamon Toast Crunch in a peanut butter sandwich.

Never mind that Albers hasn’t made flapjack flour for decades. They are focused more on corn-based products now. Lame.

Update: You are right to be outraged, but this is an April Fool’s Joke. Sadly for all of us, it was way too believable. Folks from SFist even compared the violation form to the source image on Bernalwood (sans official letterhead and staff contact) and still had to ask me! We’re that good. Sorry. Next year we’ll do something obvious like “Chevy’s opening in the Mission” or whatever.

Say, now is a good time to point out that you can watch Cosmos in its 13-part entirety on Hulu.

Not sure how I missed this (oh yeah, I was in ‘nam), but WNYC’s Radiolab did a live taping at the Mission’s Brava Theater last week, hosted by another heavy hitter in the podcasting scene (and SF native!), Jesse Thorn. Illustrator Jay Sacher was there, and whipped up an excellent illustrated review at meathaus.com.

If you haven’t heard it, Radiolab is like the this American Life of science radio. They take a broad science topic, like “symmetry” in this case, and do a number of stories on it. Jay points out that their production is a bit cutesy and they sometimes glaze over the real science to drive their narrative home, but I maintain that it’s still an entertaining show and you should totally add it to your podcast list because it will totally impress people “in the know”.
